__Akon (né Alioune Badara Thiam) est un chanteur de R'n'B américain-sénégalais, né en 1977 à Saint-Louis, au Sénégal. Il grandit au Sénégal puis vers l'âge de 7 ans, part s'installer aux États-Unis, à Jersey City, New Jersey. Akon parle anglais et wolof mais peu le français. Akon arrive aux États-Unis à 7 ans, près de New York dans le New Jersey. Il y découvre le hip hop grâce à son ami Penninckx Jeroen mais plonge dans la délinquance.
__Incarcéré, il développe ses capacités musicales en prison. Son pseudonyme Akon (A kon diminutif de « a convict » que l'on peut traduire par « un détenu ») vient de cette période. À sa sortie, il écrit et enregistre des chansons. Street Records Corporation (SRC records)/Universal le repère et le lance avec son premier album Trouble qui connaît le succès (certifié double disque d'or). Le titre Locked Up a atteint le top 10 dans les charts américains et le top 5 au Royaume-Uni. La chanson a été écrite après que Akon a fait de la prison pour vol de voiture et celle-ci a été remixée en plusieurs versions plusieurs fois selon le pays où le single est sorti.
Le second opus d'Akon, intitulé Konvicted (certifié double disque d'or), est sorti en novembre 2006 et inclut des collaborations avec des artistes tels que Snoop Dogg, Styles P et Brick and Lace ainsi que Eminem. Akon enchaîne alors featurings et singles, et profite de cette période pour créer son propre label Konvict Muzik.
__Akon a produit une partie du nouvel album des Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, notamment sur les titres I Tried et Never forget me. On peut aussi souligner sa participation au nouvel album de Tiken Jah Fakoly L'africain sur le titre Soldier mais aussi pour Thriller 25, la réédition de l'album Thriller de Michael Jackson où il remixe la chanson Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'. Il a également collaboré avec le rappeur 50 Cent sur la chanson Still kill (sur l'album Curtis de 50 Cent). Il produit l'artiste Colby O'Donis avec qui il fait un duo sur la chanson What You Got. Récemment, il a produit le single de Leona Lewis, Forgive Me. Et produit l'album des Brick and Lace.
__Son troisième album est sortit en 2008 : Freedom, il inclut les featuring avec Lil Wayne, T-Pain & Ray Lavender. Ainsi que Colby O' Donis & Kardinal Offishall, Wyclef Jean etc.
